Your step-by-step guide to the Austrian vignette
Have your vehicle's official number plate ready. For the e-vignette, the number plate is required for registration. Also check your vehicle's maximum permissible weight – vehicles over 3.5t require a GO-Box instead of a vignette.
Decide which vignette type best suits your journey: 10-day, 2-month or annual. Consider the planned trip duration and frequency, as well as value for money.
Decide whether to buy the vignette online (e-vignette) or physically at a petrol station, tobacconist or motoring club. Online purchase is more convenient and valid immediately; in-person purchase allows cash payment.
Thoroughly clean the inside of the windscreen at the desired location with a lint-free cloth. Remove dust, grease and fingerprints so that the vignette adheres optimally.
Carefully remove the protective film from the back of the vignette. Touch the adhesive surface as little as possible.
Affix the vignette from the inside of the windscreen, top left or behind the rear-view mirror. The vignette must be clearly readable from outside.
Press the vignette firmly and evenly to avoid air bubbles. Check readability from outside through the screen.
Detach the control section with the serial number and keep it as proof. It may be important in case of loss or damage to the vignette.
Vignette inspections are carried out in various ways:
During an inspection, you do not need to show documents for the vignette – the check is visual (adhesive vignette) or electronic (e-vignette).
